Totalt Jävla Mörker: Det ofrivilliga lidandets maskineri

16/09/08  ||  theProphet

Returning once more to cover an effort from Skellefteå‘s finest, I have chosen this time to dissect their full length debut, namely “Det ofrivilliga lidandets maskineri” (anyone interested can still find translations of songtitles and whatnot on TJM’s website). If you didn’t check out my review of their latest (as of now) and self titled release, I suggest you do it because the writing’s fucking brilliant, and if you did read it and didn’t bother to check the band out afterwards…then what the fuck? Why am I even bothering to do this? Writing these fucking reviews and nobody takes me seriously (wonder why that might be). Maybe I should just stop doing this and just leave you cocksuckers listening to your shitty At the Gates that EEEEEEEVERYONE seems to like SOOOOOOO FUCKING MUCH. All kidding aside though, At the Gates is waaay overrated and Totalt Jävla Mörker definitely deserves your attention. And I’m not going anywhere.

In terms of sound, “DOLM” epitomizes the raw, hardcore punk sound that TJM’s later releases (while they’re both at least as good as this one) drifted slightly away from. On this here release, the songs are more straightforward punk and the black metal (and indeed metal in general) influences are not so obvious in each song, with some exceptions. Apart from the songwriting, the production on “DOLM” is also much less clean than on their later releases. This is nothing to be surprised about, for so is usually the case, but ‘tis also nothing to complain about, for this production fits the album’s more primitive approach like a truncheon up a cop’s rectum. Also, “DOLM” features three different singers which lend an even greater diversity to the songs. However, the skill of these vocalists had not exactly reached its peak with this release and sometimes the vocals sound a little too “shouty” for my taste but I am nitpicking severely here.

By calling this album “primitive” earlier I probably conned some of you into thinking that this is a little worse than other TJM releases, right? Well, consider yourself bamboozled, ‘cause “DOLM” houses some of the best tracks ever made by Totalt Jävla Mörker. You get instant punk anthems such as “Nej till livet”, “Ursäkta min uppriktighet” and “Krossa flaskan i mitt ansikte”, “Shocking nymoralism” (which contains one of the best black metal riffs ever written) and the mighty “PK – Poliskonstapel”. This song is a fucking monster, if I had a choice between watching my entire family being burned alive or never listen to this song again, then I’d gladly go to the nearest gas station and by me a couple of gallons of regular unleaded, soaring gas prices be damned. Seriously, if this song doesn’t make you bang your head into oblivion, then I’m a homecoming queen from Ontario.

It has struck me that Totalt Jävla Mörker is probably one of my five favourite bands from Sweden, and one of my favourite bands overall. Everything they do is destined to be completely awesome, and they showed this already on their debut. Everyone of you with the slightest interested in finding music that is a genuine riot soundtrack, as well as a soundtrack to blowing your fucking brains out, is a fucking mongoloid if you don’t check this out, and a pitiful imbecile if you don’t like it.

POLITISKT KORREKTINTE JAG!!!!!!!!!

8 of you people are going to rush to the nearest record store and buy all of TJM’s releases out of 10.
